Newark & Sherwood’s Dementia Information Team have received some lottery funding to start Making Memories Befriending Service and weekly activity group for people with Dementia and other undiagnosed memory problems.
We are currently looking for volunteer Befrienders. They will receive full training, support and DBS checks.
Making Memories Befriending Service
The Service supports people with dementia and other / undiagnosed memory problems and their carers so that people can live well with Dementia and Memory problems. Trained volunteer befrienders can support service users to try new activities or to continue hobbies that they have always enjoyed, but now find more difficult.
The service aims to match volunteer befrienders with service users who have similar interests so that they can take part together; this may involve taking part in physical activities within the community such as walking & swimming or attending a group; it may even mean just having a coffee and a chat – doing the things we all enjoy. Volunteers will also visit service users in their own homes.
The service will provide carers with some free time to do the things they want.
It’s all about supporting people to continue to live the life they want and stay as active and independent for as long as possible
Activities Group
A weekly Activities Group will provide people with Dementia or memory problems and their Carers an opportunity to take part in activities and receive information on a variety of topics such as: exercise, nutrition, local services etc.
Volunteers
We are now recruiting Volunteer Befrienders for the project; if you are interested in supporting people with dementia/other memory loss and you can offer around 2 hours a week to the project then please get in touch. Full training is provided.
